With the changing of the seasons, my thoughts turn towards the outdoors. The cold hasn’t fully left the world but everywhere I look, I find texture and life. There’s the dappling of sunlight on cobblestones, or bare branches waving their new buds up to cloudy skies.

I’m inspired by patterns and textures found in the world around me. When I’m in need of ideas, I’m lucky that I can throw on my favorite pair of walking shoes and go exploring. Mesmerized by rich, overgrown moss and the jagged intersections of bark breaking through soil, I created Heerlen.

Heerlen is a quick ankle or mid-calf sock pattern that combines rich texture with simple construction and a pull-tab that will hop right off your needles and into your favorite pair of walking shoes!

SIZES

1 (2, 3, 4, 5, 6)
Intended to fit children and adults with US shoe sizes from children 9.5 through adult 14.5 or EUR shoe sizes 27-50. See photos for measurement details.

2 length options: ankle and mid-calf

CONSTRUCTION

Heerlen is knit toe-up featuring several textures to ensure a snug, sporty fit. German Short Rows are used for both heel and toe so there is no fussing with a small number of stitches.

The sock begins with a Provisional or Judy’s Magic Cast On at the widest part of the toe and knit flat. After shaping the short-row toe, the work is joined in the round to knit the seed-stitch body and cinched half-twisted rib arch. The heel uses the same short-row shaping as the toe.

Ankle socks flow into a half-twisted rib cuff, finishing off with a delicate seed stitch tab, knit flat at the back of the leg. Mid-calf socks first continue with a ribbed section around the ankle for a snug fit (optional), then either a plain stockinette or seed stitch leg, finishing with a half-twisted rib cuff and seed stitch tab.
