Inspiration for the pattern

In recent years short-row technique has been growing in popularity, and I have personally become a huge fan, using it for both shaping and creating prints in my patterns. However, I’ve heard from many knitters that they are hesitant to try my sweater patterns, because short-rows intimidate them.
This scarf/ wrap was designed especially to give you the basic principles and allow you to perfect the skill on a very simple, yet fun and effective project, so that in the future you have full confidence in your ability to tackle more intricate projects with short-rows in construction and print.

About the pattern
Hypnosis is a classic garter-based unisex scarf or wrap, the print is created using German short-rows. There are I-cords running along all 4 edges for a neater finish.
Instructions are provided for 3-color versions in 2 standard shapes, both shapes written out for 3 most typical yarn weights for scarves: DK, sport and sock:

  • Scarf ~21030 cm/ 8312” (stripes ~5 cm/2” wide)
  • Wrap ~18065 cm/ 7125” (stripes ~8 cm/3” wide) Final size will depend on your individual gauge, applied modifications and how hard you block it. The sample was worked in an intermediate size (18040 cm/ 7116”). However, it is a true recipe-pattern: there are additional tips at the end of the pattern on how to adapt this pattern for your exact needs and preferences, allowing you to:
  1. Choose the yarn weight for any climate/ season
  2. Change the size to suit your taste, make a child version, or even a blanket
  3. Change the width of the stripes (and therefore the angle of the triangles)
  4. Play with color – see suggestions for 2-4 color options and a template to try your own color scheme on page 7 (tip: this could be a perfect stash-buster for your mini’s and leftovers)
  5. If you wish, you can decorate the finished accessory with fringe (NOT included in the default yardages)

Yarns and needles
The pattern is calculated for 3 main yarn weights (DK, sport and sock) and in 2 sizes - you can find the required yardage and gauge, together with corresponding indicative needle size for each variation in the table - see pattern photos.

You can easily change the yarn weight and recalculate the pattern for your individual gauge, following instructions on possible variations and adjustments at the end of the pattern.
