CONSTRUCTION

Kessel Scarf is knit bottom-up in the round to create a long tube. It starts with a classic long-tail cast-on and a plain brioche section. You then go into a simple crossed pattern, repeated several times with plain sections in between. The scarf finishes with another band of plain brioche for symmetry. You may choose to seam the ends shut to make a cowl, so that the scarf lays flatter, or to stitch them together to create a long tube cowl.

PATTERN TECHNIQUES

  • Brioche crossed stitches (see below)

  • Traditional Bind Off
  • Mattress Stitch (optional)

GAUGE (per 4 / 10cm)

18 sts by 25 rnds (remember, in brioche all rounds are double: CC + MC) in Crossed Stitch Pattern on Needle B.

YARN

The pattern is designed for Lanivendole A Pure & Simple Wool’ (100% Aquilana wool, 328 yd / 300 m per 3.5 oz / 100 g). You will need 1 (2) skeins of each color.

The sample was knit in Adult size in colorways Pino (dark MC) and Salvia (light CC).

Heavy-fingering to sport-weight yarn (~330-380 yd / 300-350 m per 3.5 oz / 100 g) in two colors. You will need a total of 330 (660) yd / 300 (600) m of each color.

NEEDLES

32-40 / 80-100 cm circulars (for magic loop), or 10 (16) / 25 (40) cm short circulars in two sizes:
Needle A (for cast on and bind off only)
Suggested Size: US 10-10.5 / 6-7 mm
Needle B (main)
Suggested Size: US 7 / 4.5 mm

NOTIONS

2 stitch markers, cable needle (or a locking / hanging stitch marker), tapestry needle, scissors.
