Do you know what the icicles are doing now? Shhh…open your door…listen. If the temperature has nudged above the freezing mark, the icicles are dripping. Weeping. Splashing. Singing. Whatever you want to call it…the icicles are melting.

Sunshine makes the icicles sparkle merrily. Sunshine also makes the beauties melt…and when the temperature rises the lively melting music begins. Drip, drip, drip…

The song of melting icicles lightens my heart. Spring is here!

Melting Icicles Song shawl was inspired by this distinctive sound of the melting season.

A soft as a cloud shawl that is knit from side to side by weighing the yarn and increasing until you reach halfway and then start to decrease with the second half of yarn. You can shape your shawl however you want by working more repeats in some sections and skipping others. A schematic on the last page might be helpful.

For my sample, I chose two laceweight yarns, Miss Babs Yet and Moonglow. Blend of silk, mohair, and merino create a fabric that is light, drapey, and fluffy as a cloud. As an alternative yarn choice, you can combine mohair yarn with light fingering yarn instead of laceweight, or choose two fingering weight yarns for a heavier version.

The shawl is worked sideways in a garter stitch. The ‘icicles’ are formed by simple wrap and turn short rows (no need to pick up wraps). Tips of the ‘icicles’ adorned with picots. You add beads to each picot to make a weighted version.
