Inspiration:

This amazing beautiful mirrored gradient braid from Hilltop Katie just caught my eye. I have never spun cheviot before, and it turned out to be a bit if a coarser fiber than I am used to. Combined with a touch of silk, though, it was super fun. Turned out this amazing tweedy texture, I just knew I must play up those colour transitions. This mix is often used for sock knitting, but since I am not a sock knitter, I had to flex my creative muscle. A beanie, slouchy, just the right amount, was born.

It’s a simple knit, displaying the amazing texture created by knitting from 2 ends of the ball at the same time. As the fiber is dyed in a mirror gradient, the colours transitioned from shade to shade in a very natural way.

Sizes:
S, M, L (18, 20, 23) in; (46, 51, 58) cm circumference
Height 11 in (28 cm) without folded brim, with folded brim 10 in (25 cm)

Gauge:
28 sts/ 30 rows in a 4in (10cm) blocked, swatch knitted in St st on Size 3 US (3.25mm) needles. Knitted in the round, stranded method, alternating stitches from each end of the ball.

I used sock fibre super wash cheviot silk hand dyed combed top mirror gradient 100g

Amounts needed: 1 braid, I spun fingering/heavy lace weight double ply 18-24 wpi approx. 360 meters.

Notions:
• Size US (3.25mm) needles, preferably circulars with 16 in (40cm) cord,
• Same size DPN’s,
• 1 stitch marker of different colour to denote BOR, 4 same-coloured markers.
• Darning needle.
Skills required:
• Knitting stranded
• Long tail CO,
• Simple sewing,
• Embroidery.

Notes about construction:

Knitted in the round, alternating knit stitches from each end of the yarn ball. The edge of hat is folded under, sewed to hold shape. Optional Embroidery is done with desired thread/yarn.

Any mirror gradient commercial yarn can be used instead of home spun to achieve this effect. If using semisolid colour, still knit stranded using 2 ends of yarn from the same ball.
