Tools and Materials
• US size 6 and size 9 circular needles (whatever length you’re most comfortable with) - you’ll
• be knitting in the round
o Using two (2) sets of needles is optional, but people seem to prefer the brim to be a little tighter than the body. You can change up the needle sizes to make slight size adjustments, but 9s are a good size for the body because the design is not extremely stretchy, so you’ll want it a bit more loose.
• US size 9 DPNs (4 of them)
• worsted weight yarn in black and a contrasting color of your choice (which will be referred to as BG), and red for the eyes
• yarn needle, for closing the top as well as the duplicate stitching eyes
• crochet hook (optional, for weaving in ends)
• a stitch marker (optional, but recommended for the crown)

Gauge: As patterned, you’ll have approximately 4 sts/inch and 4 rows/inch. This gives you an average adult-sized hat. When laying flat, the hat measures about 10” long and 10” across. It will stretch to 11” or a little more (22” circumference). If you want to attempt a smaller size attempt dropping a needle size and/or using sport or DK yarn.

Skills Needed
• knitting in the round (rnd)
• colorwork knitting
• duplicate stitch
