Looking for a different way to make a mitten? Want to learn German Short rows? This is what you are looking for!

I wanted to see if I could make a gusseted, thumbed mitten without cutting and rejoining the yarn. It turned out that working sideways is the key!

They’re worked flat, and I’ve used short rows to shape the thumb gusset, and to improve the fit of the cuff and edgings.

The pattern uses German Short Rows. If you’ve not worked them before, I’ve provided detailed instructions. If you’ve worked the wrap & turn version of the short row technique, you may well find yourself pleasantly surprised by these: they’re a little easier to work, and significantly easier to make tidy.
