Orkney Hood
Crochet pattern for an Orkney hood: a knit garment found on the Scottish island of Orkney, dated between the 3rd and 7th centuries CE. I can’t knit, so I approximated the design via crochet.
No gauge provided by me, but you can follow the gauge on the yarn labels to make sure your tension’s not especially tight or loose.
Sizing: one size should fit most, but I recommend sewing a wearable template if you wish to alter the length or width of the piece to fit better. My finished hood (incl. trim, excl. chained fringe) measured approx. 27 cm (10.6”) along top seam, 44 cm (17.3”) at widest point (folded in half), 74 cm (29.1”) along back seam.
I used 3 skeins Caron Simply Soft in Dark Sage, 2 skeins Lion Brand Wool Ease in Umber, 1 skein Loops & Threads Impeccable in Aran. Making every part of the pattern, I had leftover yarn on the last skein of each colour. Subtract 1 skein each of Dark Sage and Umber if not adding a chained fringe (i.e. even if doing a simple fringe).
