MY DESIGN IDEAS AND ADVICE
I love a hand-knitted cable – they’re timeless. This one is simple to knit, with cables that flow naturally together. I design my cables to work in harmony, so after a few repeats you can settle into a rhythm and enjoy the soothing stitches.

This cardigan was another Purl &Jane studio request. I originally designed the Rukin Cable Cardigan for children, and as often happens with my children’s patterns, I had lots of requests for an adult version – this time with pockets!

The cardigan is knitted in pieces and worked from the bottom up.

CONSTRUCTION
The back, left front with pocket, right front with pocket, two sleeves are knitted flat in separate pieces and joined together. Neck edging and buttonhole bands are picked up after the pieces are knitted.

TECHNIQUES USED
Cast on, knit, purl, simple cables, increasing, decreasing, picking up stitches, buttonholes, pocket placements, cast off, seaming, sewing on buttons. Optional but recommended to create a joy of joining your pieces: mattress stitch seaming and three needle cast off.

YARN
7(8:9:9:10) 100 hanks of WYS Bluefaced Leicester Aran.
100% British Bluefaced Leicester wool, 166m/182yds per 100g

SUGGESTED KNITTING NEEDLES
4.5mm and 5mm.
Cable needle.

NOTIONS
6 buttons.

GAUGE (tension)
18 stitches and 24 rows to 10cm/4ins square over pattern. I obtained this gauge with 5mm needles.
It is important to obtain the correct gauge so do work a swatch before you start the pattern and change your needle size to achieve the correct gauge if you need to.

FINISHED MEASUREMENTS
I recommend a positive ease of 1-4ins/2.5-10cm at the chest.
