Do you have one skein of hand-dyed sock yarn that would make a beautiful scarf, but one skein isn’t long enough? Well now you can make your scarf by adding some contrasting minis or leftover yarns in your stash! The Owen Scarf is a fun, easy scarf worked in the round and looks like sweater sleeves at the ends (which may be left smaller than the width of the body or may be blocked to the same width as the body). Stripes add interest and length to your scarf. Instructions are given for a jogless join for your stripes, and because it’s a tube you don’t really have to weave in all those ends since nobody will see the wrong side of your work!

The Owen Scarf has a VERY LOOSE GAUGE so it knits up quickly and makes a scarf with a lovely soft drape. It will feel wrong knitting fingering-weight yarn with Size 7 needles, but trust the process; you won’t be disappointed.

Instructions are given for a version with 7 contrasting colors that I made with random stash leftovers and a version with 5 contrasting colors that I made using a mini set. And of course you’ll need a full 100g skein as your main color and initial inspiration for colors. You can also make it completely scrappy to use up any beautiful stash yarn remnants that you just can’t let go of! When choosing yarns for the stripes you will need 10-15g of most contrasting colors, but 5g is enough for 2 of the smaller stripes or one medium stripe in the middle section. If making the scrappy version you’ll need at least 10g to make one of the large stripes in the end sections.

There are optional embroidery charts (using duplicate stitch / Swiss darning). You’ll love seeing the turtle siblings Owen and Grace even if you choose not to add them to your scarf. They are completely optional and won’t be offended if you skip them because they don’t match your vibe.

The pattern is available in both regular print and large print if needed; both PDFs are available to download after purchase. In both versions the pattern is fully written and charts are provided, but in the large print version the charts use symbols rather than colors.

I had a lot of fun making the scarf, and I hope you will too!
