The color of the waters surrounding the islands in the South Pacific changes from brilliant blue to a dark steely gray in mere moments when a sudden squall rages through, but when the seas are calm the water’s edge has a special quality to it—waves of softest pale turquoise gently caress the sandy beaches with a sparkling brilliance that will take your breath away.

Here a simple shell pattern that makes beautiful points on the cast-on edge is combined with an ocean wave on either side. Knit from cast on edge to the center in two pieces, the halves are then grafted together, or joined with a 3-needle bind off.

Yarn: lace weight; 250, 550 600, 1050 yards.

Dimensions: 8.5 x 51, 12.25 x 77 (20 x 51, 23.75 x 77) inches; 21.5 x 129.5, 31 x 195.5 (51 x 129.5, 60.5 x 195.5) cm.

Stitch instructions: Charted and written.

Other requirements: Large stitch holder and yarn needle for grafting are required (or third knitting needle for 3-needle bind off); stitch markers optional.

Skills: Skills: K2tog, ssk, s2-k1-p2sso, grafting or 3-needle bind off

Difficulty: Easy-intermediate.

Note: Charts B and C only have 11 RS rows, while charts A and D have 13 RS rows. After knitting row 12 of all charts, knit row 13 of chart A, row 1 of charts B and C, and row 13 of chart D. Then, the next RS row knit row 1 of chart A, row 3 of charts B and C, row 1 of chart D. Continue in this manner per pattern instructions.

Update: Pattern completely revised, released November 10, 2014. New model knit with the lovely Serenity from Claudia Hand Painted Yarns in Tranquility, updated charts, four sizes instead of two, written stitch instructions, tech edited.
