Pattern #5019

This whimsical poncho is designed as a layering piece. It can be worn to fine effect in nearly any configuration. I’ve combined a simple lace pattern with intermittent garter stitch ridges. The poncho is “petite” enough to allow for unconstrained arm movement.

I have knitted this poncho five times; it has worked well in a variety of commercial and handspun yarns (lace weight to worsted weight, s
smooth to bumpy, stretchy to drapey). All versions have their charm.

Yarn: For the poncho in the photos, I used Claudia Hand Painted Yarns, Fingering Weight (100% Merino wool, 175 yards and 50 grams per skein). I used 3 skeins of color “Oops!”.

Gauge: 5 sts per inch and 10 rows per inch in garter stitch, unstretched.

Needles: US size 7 needles

Additional tools: two pairs of smaller size (say, US size 1-3) circular needles, at least 16” in length for picking up stitches; one darning needle for binding off and weaving in ends.
