Introduction: This hat is for the humans of cats who pounce on every moving object (and some stationary ones). With stranded cats pouncing on motifs around the crown, the Pounce Hat is a perfect accessory for showcasing your love of cats. I originally designed this after having designed the Go Fetch Hat so that our cat Butternut Squash wouldn’t feel left out.

Materials:
Yarn:  Two colors of wool sport weight yarn, or weight to match gauge. A skein of each color will knit any size. If using scrap yarn or mini skeins, allow approximately 70 g for MC and 25 g for CC.

Navy sample uses MC: Malabrigo Arroyo in Prussia Blue and CC: Malabrigo Sock in Carnival held with Adriafil Mohair in white.

Purple sample uses fingering weight yarn held double. MC: Bumblebirch Wellspring held double in Eggplant and CC: Hedgehog Sporty Merino in Artifact.

Needles: US 5 (3.75mm) 16” circular needle and DPNs and US 3 (3.25mm) 16” circular needle, or size required for gauge.

Notions: Stitch markers, tapestry needle for weaving in ends.

Gauge:
23st x 28 rounds = 4 inches square in stranded colorwork in the round after blocking on larger needles.

Sizes:
XS (S, M, L) to fit heads of 19.5” (21”, 22.5”, 24”).
To choose a size, please measure the recipient’s head. Sizes are meant to be an approximate fit for child (teen, adult woman, adult man).
Sample is knitted in size M for a woman’s head of 23”.

Techniques required:

  • Simple decreases

  • Stranded color work in the round: The stranded colorwork design is entirely charted and includes some long floats.
