Rhytidome was designed to show off a glorious hand painted skein of sock yarn or lace weight. A wide shallow triangle, it is made from the bottom point up, and then finished with an openwork edging. The pattern instructions are written out, as a chart is neither necessary nor particularly advantageous with this design.

The directional stitches and texture of the knitted fabric play up variegation in colour. Leave it squooshy (yes, that is so a word!) or block it open and lacy - the decision is yours.

This pattern makes use of the following techniques:

• provisional cast on
• directional decreases
• knitted on edging (thoroughly explained, and worked only along the top edge after everything else is finished)
• blocking using wires or strings (optional)

It is suitable for knitters with intermediate skill levels (I would say adventurous beginners, except that if you drop a stitch it is rather complex to correct).

This is a great one-skein project for lace or fingering weight yarn, but could easily be adapted for heavier yarns, too. The needle size suggested is only a loose guideline. Choose a needle that is quite a bit larger than you would normally use, as it is the needle size that makes the stitch pattern lacy.

This is not a traditional lace pattern, as it does not employ yarn overs and matched decreases in the standard manner.

The sample shown in the photographs used a 380yd skein of fingering weight hand painted yarn, and was lightly blocked to 56” wide across the top and 22” down the spine.
