Pittsburgh’s three rivers -- the Allegheny, the Monongahela, and the Ohio -- have long played a huge role in the city’s daily life. In the early years, they enabled the city’s growth through shipping and transportation. More recently, the rivers have been central to recreation. No matter where you live in Pittsburgh, at some point you will find yourself crossing these rivers.

This shawl is knit in several directions, starting with the ribbed cabled band that forms the lower edging. Next stitches are picked up along one side and short rows are used to form the main body. Finally, stitches are picked up along the bottom edge for the final border.

To knit this pattern, you should know how to:

  • do a provisional cast on, using any method;
  • work a rib and cable pattern;
  • slip stitches;
  • pick up stitches from along a slipped-stitch edge, both knitwise and purlwise;
  • work short rows using w&t; and
  • work an I-cord bind off.

The ribbed cable pattern is both written and charted, and directions are included for the I-cord bind off. Additionally, because the short rows are worked in garter stitch, the wraps do not need to be picked up.
