A very old tradition, the Christmas socks would be linked to Saint Nicolas.

One day Saint Nicholas met three very poor young sisters. Touched by the situation and the kindness of the girls, Saint Nicholas decided to help them. When night came, he went to these three sisters and poured a bag of gold coins down the chimney. The coins fell into the socks that had been put to dry on the fireplace.
