The months are slowly ticking away and we all lost our freedom to travel. The irony of developing The Travelling East Collection in this unprecedented time is not lost on me. Onward we go; one day I hope we’ll all have a chance to visit the beautiful far East (again). While we wait, here is Sasan, the fourth pattern in the Travelling East Collection.

Each tile in the collection comes with an accompanying triangle (to give you the freedom to use your squares as diamonds in cushions or blankets). It also comes with an original design to showcase the many possibilities we have to turn these tiles into different type of objects. Some will be small and simple, some will be larger and require some more time. The collection of patterns will give you options and suggestions. Enjoy!

The design accompanying the Sasan tile is a simple but eye catching potholder or hot pad. Two tiles, joined in the round with a little loop to hang them in your kitchen. No need to make things complicated, simplicity can be just as stunning.

Gauge:
Gauge is not crucial for this pattern, as long as your tile lies flat. However, different yarns give different gauges:
No 5 crochet thread & 2.5mm hk: 11x11cm / 4½x4½”
Fingering weight & 3.5mm hk: 13x13cm / 5¼x5¼”
DK weight & 4mm hk: 15.5x15.5cm / 6x6”
Aran weight & 5mm hk: 18.5x18.5cm / 7¼x7¼”

Hooks:
√ Depending on yarn choice, 2.5mm/C, 3mm/D, 4mm/G-6 or 5mm/H-8 crochet hook (Adapt hook to yarn used).

Notions
√ Tapestry needle, stitch markers.
√ Optional: Some fleece or other recycled cloth to fold in between the two tiles to secure a heat resisting hot pad.

Yarn:
√ A #0 lace (size 5 crochet thread), #2 fine (Fingering, 12wpi) or #3 lightweight (DK, 11wpi), or #4 medium (Aran, 8wpi) per tile:

  • approx 30m/33yd (C1).
  • approx 35m/38yd (C2).
  • approx 30m/33yd (C3).

√ The potholders were made in DK weight cotton in 2 colours per tile: Performance Simply Cotton in black as C1 (20g, 55m/60yd) and Bergere Coton Fifty in lavender as C2 (40m/43yd) per potholder.
√ The Blue Aran weight sample tile used Katia Planet in colours 3977 (C1), 3973 (C2) and 3982 (C3).
