This pattern has been adapted from an out-of-print pattern from the early 80s. These hats were a staple of my childhood, with my Mom knitting them for me and every kid she could find to wear them.
As the years have gone on, and my family and friends have begun having children, I’ve carried on the tradition of knitting kitty balaclavas for all!
The original pattern was knit flat with several seams, and I thought it would be wonderful to be able to knit it seamlessly with only a couple of ends to weave in after casting off.
It took a few tries, but I’ve managed it with cleverly placed short rows and decreases. The result is the same adorable hat with a much more satisfying finish.
Whether you’ve knit the original or are trying this for the first time, I hope you enjoy it and continue to spread the joy and warmth that only knitted cat ears can!
