The Shift Sweater is a relaxed crew neck featuring color blocking and shaped sleeves. With a cozy all-over broken rib stitch and a folded collar, it’s the sweater you want by your side on chilly evenings and summer nights when the sun goes down.

The Shift Sweater is worked from the top down. First, the upper back is worked. Next, stitches are picked up for the front shoulders and the neckline is formed. The front and back are then joined in the round to work the body. Stitches are picked up around the armholes to work the sleeves. Finally, stitches are picked up around the neck and the collar is worked.

Gauge

19 sts x 33 rows = 10 cm / 4 in on 4.5 mm (US 7) needles in slipped broken rib stitch after blocking. Needle size is a suggestion, and you may need to go up or down a size in order to meet gauge.

Needles

Circular needles: 4.5 mm (US 7) / 60, 80, or 100 cm (24, 32 or 40 inches) for body, 3.5 mm (US 4) / 60, 80, or 100 cm (24, 32 or 40 inches) for hem

Double-pointed needles: 3.5 mm (US 4) or use the magic loop technique for neckline and cuffs

Materials

One strand of DK or light worsted weight wool or wool-blend yarn. Cover sample is knit in Knitting for Olive Heavy Merino (125 m/137 yds per 50 g) in Deep Petroleum Blue (main color) and Dusty Petroleum Blue (contrast color).

Other yarn may be used as long as you meet gauge. A thicker yarn will result in a denser fabric and a thinner yarn will create more drape.
