Maybe you don’t know the word shoji but i’m sure you know what is stands for. A shoji is a bamboo frame filled with paperwork, which are often used as walls in homes and temples around Asia. The bamboo frame can also be a wooden one or these days even plastic. I came up with these design due the fact i had one of these walls with the exact same design of this pattern in my hotelroom in Chengdu. When I was asked to do something with the new bamboo yarns from Scheepjes, the first connection which got in my head was bamboo, shoji and interlocking mosaic crochet. So here it is, the Shoji pattern. It is not a big project but it can be used as a baby blanket or a nice rug to to brighten up your closet or desk. And the pattern contains options to make this even bigger, so you could make a blanket out of it as well. I hope you will enjoy the pattern as much as i did making and creating it !

Materials needed :

  • A crochet hook size 3,5 mm
  • Sewing needle and scissors
  • blocking materials

Yarn needed :

I used 17 balls of Scheepjes Bamboo Soft - 1 of each color available. If you use another yarn you need around 30 - 40 grams of yarn for each color.

It is a free pattern in PDF file. Available in English (US) and Dutch. More translations will follow. You can also find futher details or the pattern itself on my blog.

Gauge :
One single Repeat section of 26 Rows and 17 stitches in Bamboo Soft will be approx. 9cm x 9cm / 3,5 inches x 3,5 inches

Finished Size :
The finished size of the pattern in Bamboo Soft will be 105 cm / 41,5 inches x 70 cm / 27,5 inches
However, if you like a larger project, you can always make more Repeats in a Row. Each Repeat contains 17 stitches, so if you like to enlarge it in weidth just add the amount of needed repeats to the pattern. Height can be obtained by just repeating all the Rows over and over.

As it is a free pattern, this pattern is not tested. It could always hold a errata or typo. If so, please contact me or look here to check if i made new notes for it.I will update and write it down if thats the case.
