Almost but not quite rolled into a ball, these hedgies are a bit shy but also interested in making new friends. They fit nicely in a hand and since the eyelash yarn creates a soft fabric, they may be loosely stuffed to make them especially soft and squishy. You can choose between making a European hedgehog or a pet (African pygmy) hedgehog with appropriate ears and coloring - but they would look just as cute in fantasy colors!

Size
About 15cm (6”) if made with DK or worsted yarn for the body

Tools and materials
~ plain DK or worsted weight yarn, and an eyelash yarn
~ crochet hooks: 3mm/C or 3.5mm/E for the plain yarn parts (or the size that gives you a tight, no-gaps fabric); 5mm/H for the eyelash yarn
~ black plastic safety eyes - 6mm for DK yarn, 7.5mm for worsted
~ fiberfill stuffing
~ sewing or embroidery thread in the color of the eyelash yarn, and a matching needle
~ stitch markers, pair of scissors, yarn needle
~ optionally, wire cutters to shorten the eye stems

Difficulty
This pattern is suitable for intermediate to advanced level crocheters who are confident with basic stitches (sl st, sc, hdc, dc, tr) and frequently used amigurumi techniques (magic ring, invisible decrease, working in BLO).
Working with eyelash yarns can be quite challenging, but I tried to make it as stress free as possible: after the first round, you won’t need to count stitches while you work with the fuzzy yarn.

The pattern is written in English using US crochet terminology (UK/Aus equivalents provided). It contains many in-progress photos, but also includes a text-only appendix for easy printing, if you prefer working from a printed pattern but want to save ink and paper.

Finished amigurumi made from this pattern are yours to keep or gift or sell, I only ask you to credit me as the designer in case you decide to sell them.

I don’t usually suggest specific yarn brands, but eyelash yarns vary wildly and your choice will have a huge impact on the hedgehog’s looks. If you are going for a realistic appearance, I recommend Ice Yarns Eyelash in White Black - its feathers are dense but not too long and the perfect mottled color. You can order directly from their website (they deliver worldwide), or for 1-2 skeins find a local seller on Etsy.
