This simple pattern allows the yarn to shine. It is one of my absolute favourite kinds of shawl and the way it is knitted makes it light to wear, both wrapped around the neck and draped over the shoulders. It can be made small, light and neat or thicker and larger. Here I let my imagination run free and I thought that if my great-grandmother Greta had had a lace shawl, it would probably have been one like this: simple, elegant and hard-wearing – exactly how I want my everyday clothes to be.

Method: The shawl is worked in garter stitch in rows with a simple lace border.

SIZE: ONE SIZE Yarn quantity: 175g (6¼oz)

Yarn: Single SW Merino from Ullrike by Anki; 100g/3½oz/366m/400yds

Finished measurements: 40cm (15¾in) wide at the widest point, 145cm (57in) long.

Shade: Steel

Needles: 3.5mm (UK 9/10, US 4)

Tension (gauge): 24 sts × 36 rows in garter stitch on 3.5mm (UK 9/10, US 4) needles = 10 × 10cm (4 × 4in)

Other: markers, darning needle for fastening off ends.

Variation: if you want more texture, you can knit a simple eyelet pattern with yo and k2tog evenly spaced in the garter stitch area to vary the look more
