Southern Skies Poncho
You can use any weight yarn you like as long as you can meet the gage (5 SC = 1”). We have tested the pattern with Cascade Ultra Pima DK, Cloudborn Fibers Pima Cotton DK, Berocco Comfort DK (acrylic) and Scheepjes Whirl/Whirlettes.
This pattern does NOT contain any charts - its is a written pattern only. The mosaic technique used is OVERLAY mosaic.
This pattern was originally designed as a holiday gift for my mom but the progress pictures were so well received, I thought I’d try writing the pattern out to share. Since my mom has always adored visiting our local zoo, I thought I would like to try to raise some funds to donate to them in support of their conservation programs. With that in mind, 50% of all proceeds from the sale of this pattern will be donated to the Connecticut Zoological Society.
Portions of this pattern are borrowed from the Southwestern Mosaic Cross Throw by Tara Sensenbaugh and are used by permission of the author.
This pattern uses 6 colors, 5 are used to create an ombre effect and 1 adds the pop of contrast in the mosaic pattern.
Here is a summary of the approximate yardage needed by color:
Color & Yardage
A - 1000
B - 550
C - 550
D - 550
E - 275
F - 400
If you use gradient yarns as I did with the Scheepjes, you need approximately 3 whirls for the ombre sections and approximately 1 whirlette each for Color A and Color F.
