THIS IS A GREAT PATTERN FOR YOU IF:

  • You want to learn the basics of mosaic knitting with our easy to follow instructions and tutorials.
  • You enjoy making patterns with easy to memorize repeats and lots of texture.
  • You need a versatile cowl to add some color to your wardrobe.
  • You want to experiment with fading colors.

SKILLS NEEDED
This pattern is suitable for an adventurous beginner knitter. It is important that you know the basic knitting stitches - knit and purl - and also how to knit in the round. Tutorials are included for more advanced techniques and transitions.

TUTORIALS

YARN
Spiral Staircase was designed using 6 mini skeins of fingering weight yarn in high contrast colors. You will need approximately 20 g/92 yds per color for a total of 120 g/552 yds. Yardage is based off a 4-ply fiber with 75% superwash merino & 25% nylon.

Choose your most favorite mini skeins or scraps in coordinating, high contrast colors. Solids or speckles work just fine, but which one you use will impact the contrast of your cowl. Use 6 solids for the most contrast, use 6 speckled skeins for the least contrast, or alternate solid and speckled skeins for something in between.

NOTIONS

  • Crochet hook & scrap yarn for provisional cast-on.
  • (1) Stitch marker to indicate beginning of round.
  • Darning needle for weaving in ends.

NEEDLES
(1) US5 (3.75 mm) - 24” (or less) circular needle, or size needed to obtain gauge. If you tend to be a loose knitter you may need one needle size smaller.

FINISHED MEASUREMENTS
Height: 13.25 in/33 cm Circumference: 24.5 in/61.5 cm - Finished measurements are easily adjustable. Tips on adjusting to your perfect size are included in the pattern.

MODS YOU CAN MAKE USING THE SPIRAL STAIRCASE MODIFICATION MANUAL
The Spiral Staircase Cowl Modification Manual includes detailed instructions for modifying your cowl in 2 ways:

  • 6-Color, 5-Section Cowl: This modification uses 6 colors, but instead of 6 sections like the original pattern, this cowl has 5. This modification requires a little bit more yarn per color, and is great for those who are stash busting.
  • 4-Color, 4-Section Cowl: This modification allows you to make the original 4-color, 4-section cowl design. This modification requires more yarn per color, and is great for stash busting partial skeins.

Your pattern purchase includes a Spiral Staircase Cowl Modification Manual, you can find it at the end of your Pattern Booklet PDF.
