The Stepping Stones scarf is the gigantic, cosy scarf of your dreams. I created it for one of my first Sydney winters after I lived overseas - it was colder than I was used to inside, and I found I needed all the layers to keep warm. After finding Abbey Road’s Born to be Wool, I knew I needed to turn it into a chunky, textured scarf. The resulting scarf is the perfect size and thickness to be ridiculously cosy while still being practical enough to wear under a jacket outside.\

This pattern is the perfect first foray into learning charts. The chart is a tiny, 4 stitch repeat, and comes with corresponding written instructions so you can still see the stitches written out as you get used to reading the chart. Or ignore the chart all together, and just use the written instructions, if you like!

It’s also an excellent stepping stone towards learning how to knit cables - and especially, how to knit cables without a cable needle. I’ve made a lot of cables in my time and I’ve never owned a cable needle. This project is the perfect way to practice the technique since the cables are only 2 stitches wide. I’ve provided a tutorial in both picture and video form to step you through the stitches. Once you get the hang of the stitches, your scarf will knit up much faster than if you use a cable needle. However, if it’s not working out for you, or you want to practice cabling with a cable needle, there are full instructions and a video tutorial for how to do the stitches with a cable needle too.
