The Sumac Bonnet is a great beginner bonnet. There’s no joining in the round, no DPNs, no fancy crown shaping. It’s a beautifully simple pattern that will work up in no time with just a few common knitting skills. The bonnet is worked flat throughout.

This pattern was written with the assumption that you have a basic knowledge of knitting. If you don’t, there are some wonderful YouTube videos that can teach you the basics of casting on, knitting the stitches mentioned below, and binding off.

YARN: I made this bonnet with Novita’s Nordic Wool, a light DK weight yarn. Any light DK weight (size 3) yarn, and even some heavy sport weight yarn, should work fine. Some similar ones include Patons Classic Wool DK Superwash, King Come Merino Blend DK, and Universal Yarns Deluxe DK Superwash.

GAUGE OF YARN: 20 sts by 22 rows = 4” of stockinette.

YARDAGE: The newborn size uses less than 70 yards of yarn; the 2-5-year-old bonnet uses closer to 140 yards.

TOOLS
· 1 ball of DK weight (size 3) yarn, increase or decrease needle size as necessary to meet gauge.
· Size 7 (4.5 mm) straight needles (cabled would work fine too, we’re just knitting flat though!)
· Yarn Needle
· 2 stitch markers
· Scissors
