SUMMERTIME GRANNY SQUARES CAL

MATERIALS
– 3.5-mm (E/4 USA, 9 UK) Crochet Hook
– 3.0-mm (C/2 USA, 11 UK) Crochet Hook
– DK Cotton Yarn
– Tapestry Needle

YARN
For my squares, I used Paintbox Yarns Cotton DK.
Find it on LoveCrafts (my affiliate link) --> HERE

Feel free to use any yarn you want (and especially consider using a softer yarn if you’re going to crochet a blanket).

SIZE
Each square measures:
– 4.75” (12 cm) if you use cotton DK yarn and a 3.5-mm hook;
– 5.5” (14 cm) if you use acrylic DK yarn and a 4.0-mm hook;
– 7” (18 cm) if you use acrylic Aran/Worsted yarn and a 5.5.-mm hook.

HOW MUCH YARN WILL YOU NEED?
If you participated in any of the past granny square CALs, you know that I don’t write these patterns for a specific final project.

You can choose to make blankets, wall hangings, wearables, bags, etc…

So, to estimate how much yarn to get, I’ll leave here some guidelines/yardages that can help you calculate how many skeins to buy.

For each square, you’ll need approximately:
– 9 yds (8.5 m) for the center of the granny square (rounds 1-4)
– 21.5 yds (19.5 m) for squaring (rounds 5-8)

So, for a blanket:
Baby Blanket of ~ 30” by 35” (76 cm by 90 cm) with 6 by 7 squares = 42 total squares: 7 or 8 skeins of color A (White), 1 skein each for the other colors.
Receiving Blanket of ~ 40” by 40” (100 cm by 100 cm) with 8 by 8 squares = 64 total squares: 10 skeins of color A (White), 1 skein each for the other colors.

However, if you’re making a blanket, consider switching to acrylic yarn instead of 100% cotton otherwise the blanket will be very heavy and not extremely soft.

GAUGE
Using your 3.5-mm hook, 3 rounds of a simple circle granny square (see page 8) just a bit short of 2” (5 cm).
