The Sunshine and Shadow Cowl combines varying width stripes in stockinette stitch and textured mosaic stitches worked in garter stitch. The title Sunshine and Shadow is a nod to the mosaic design worked first with the light color as contrast and then reversing the colors so it becomes the background. The stripes remind me of beautiful tall trees backlit by the sunshine. The width of the stripes is as random and varied as the size of trees in a forest along one of my favorite hiking trails.

The design also echoes the difficulties we have all faced due to the current pandemic, and the hope for a brighter future with a light at the end of the tunnel.

I designed this cowl as a skill-building pattern for the confident advanced beginner looking to expand their skills or an interesting project for an intermediate knitter. The geometric design is created with mosaic knitting - a way to create a colorwork pattern while holding only one yarn at a time, just knitting/purling and slipping stitches.
