The story behind Textures of Comfort is one of grief & joy.

2020 was rough for a lot of us. Despite the fact that we were all facing the same pandemic, we have not faced the same grief. Whether you lost a family member, friend, pet, neighbor, job, home, or just your sense of normalcy, we’ve all experienced some significant grief in the last year.

But through that grief, there were also moments of joy. Some of my moments of joy were socially distanced family gatherings, zoom hangouts with friends, a new furry friend to quarantine with, and our first female, Black and South Asian Vice President. The grief is always there, but the joy mixes in, too.

Everyone’s grief is different. But in the joy we can find comfort.

Textures of Comfort is meant to be just that - a project that through its various textures will be of comfort while knitting it. Repeating across the scarf are three different texture sections and a contrast section to break them up. The textures are simple stitch patterns that are easy to memorize while also creating an interesting finished item. The contrast section is garter stitch, meant to give your mind a rest.

The texture sections are meant to represent grief. Your grief is unique to you and is not the same day-to-day. The contrast section is meant to represent that joy. I used mohair as my contrast section because the fluffiness makes me happy. You may want to use a bright color. Do whatever brings you joy!

FINAL MEASUREMENTS
10 in (25.4cm) wide and 100 in (254cm) long.

GAUGE
26 st and 37 rows over 4” (10cm) in stockinette st on US 4 (3.5mm) needles after blocking.
Gauge is not crucial to this project, but variations will affect yardage and final measurements.

NEEDLES
US 4 size (3.5mm) or size needed to obtain gauge.

NOTIONS

• Blocking pins
• Darning/tapestry needle

YARN
Yardage:

• MC: 688yd/629m of fingering weight
• CC: 570yd/521m of lace weight mohair (held double) or approximately 285yd/261m of fingering weight

Original purple sample used 2 skeins of each:

• MC: Heathered Handmades Simple Sock (100% SW Merino, 438 yds, 100 g) in Heartsong
• CC: Heathered Handmades Mohair Lace (72% kid mohair/28% silk, 459 yds, 50 g) in Heartsong (held double)

Any wool or wool blend fingering weight yarn that meets gauge will work for this pattern.

There are instructions included in the pattern pdf for modifications to use less yarn. Using these instructions will result in a slightly shorter scarf, but the same width.

Green sample was knit all in the MC with the “5 repeats” modification:

• 2 skeins of Heathered Handmades Simple Sock (100% SW Merino, 438 yds, 100g) in Emerald
