The 8-Bit Top
The 8-Bit Top is a bold statement top with colorwork designs reminiscent of 8-bit visuals. The top is fully customizable and is made to measure.
This pattern will guide you in how to calculate your measurements, stitch count, and row count using a 4x4 gauge swatch. Because of the nature in which the top is designed, any gauge, needle size, and yarn weight can be used to make your top. Go wild!
While the 8-Bit Top was originally made using worsted weight yarn, most of my testers used DK and sport weight yarn. All of my testers followed the gauge method and made beautiful tops. You will love them!
Here are the pattern specs:
MATERIALS:
If possible, find a knit in the yarn weight of choice and base your amounts on that. I recommend using 3 different colors (MC, CC1, CC2). I used around 300g of yarn for a top with 2”-3”/5-7.5 cm positive ease on a 33”/84 cm full bust. I have also provided my tester’s specs to help guide you in your yarn selection and amounts.
Any needle size to match the gauge for your yarn is fine. I recommend a 60cm-80cm cord for circular needles.
I also recommend having:
- Darning needle
- 4mm crochet hook or hook to match smaller needle size
- 8 stitch markers
- Scrap yarn
- Norwegian knitting thimble (optional; used in continental stranded colorwork)
TECHNIQUES:
- Knit and purl stitches
- K & P increases
- Working in the round
- Stranded colorwork
- Reading charted colorwork
- Provisional cast on
- German twist cast on OR tubular cast on/bind off
- Casting on stitches in the middle of a row
- Folded collar (optional)
- German short rows (optional)
All techniques with an asterisk have video tutorials linked in the pattern.
This is an intermediate-level pattern.
