Inspired by Claire’s shawl from Outlander, this piece leans into warmth and ease—my own cozy interpretation, knit in plush bulky weight yarn.

Design Features

  • Cozy tube-style shrug in 1×1 rib
  • Lovely relaxed gauge for cushy drape and ease
  • Seamless construction; clean edges
  • Simple, modern silhouette that layers effortlessly

Construction & Techniques

  • Worked seamlessly in the round from cast-on to bind-off
  • 1×1 rib throughout (k1, p1)
  • Bind off in pattern; weave in ends; light block

Materials & Specifications

  • Yarn: Bulky #5; sample shown in Lion Brand Hue + Me, 2 skeins
  • Needles: 5.5 mm (US 9) circular, 24–32” cable (or size to obtain gauge)
  • Notions: stitch marker (BOR), tapestry needle, scissors

Gauge

14 sts × 14 rnds = 4” (10 cm) in 1×1 rib, lightly relaxed after blocking

Knit a swatch and adjust needle size as needed to match this relaxed fabric

Finished Size

  • Circumference: 26” (66 cm)
  • Width (flat): 13” (33 cm)
  • Length: 18” (46 cm)

Skill Level

Beginner-friendly (knit/purl in the round)

Usage

  • Toss over tees, dresses, and tanks for easy warmth without bulk
  • Great TV knit and stash buster in neutrals or brights

Customization

  • To adjust circumference: cast on in multiples of 2; at ~3.5 sts/in, each +2 sts ≈ +0.6” (1.6 cm)
  • To adjust length: work more/ fewer rounds to desired measurement
  • Try a longer cable for more relaxed knitting if your tube feels snug on a 24” needle

Care

  • Follow fiber label; generally, gentle hand wash, lay flat to dry
  • Light blocking (seam works great) preserves that soft, relaxed rib
