This is The Great Outdoors DK weight Sock Collection - Cuff Down Construction.

If you like Toe Up construction this collection is offered in that format as well, which you can find here: The Great Outdoors Socks Toe Up

I wanted to create a collection of easy, beginner friendly sock patterns that work up in a jiffy! I enjoy super cold winters in Northern Canada and wanted to beef up my sock collection with some thick, extra squishy socks! But I also wanted to have fun with colours and textures and be able to use any fingering weight sock yarn in my stash to accomplish all this!

So the idea of a DK weight sock collection was born.

Here are the particulars:

  1. We are holding fingering weight sock yarn DOUBLE! This creates opportunity to use all that gorgeous yarn you have socked away because these are FAST! DK weight sock yarn is also totally acceptable to use. I would recommend using a sock appropriate yarn so you get maximum wear out of your socks.

  2. These are constructed from the cuff down. We use a German Twisted CO and work the leg to a heel flap. The heel is turned and the gusset decreased before working the foot and the toe decreases. The sock is finished at the toe with kitchener stitch. I’ve included links to helpful resources of these techniques in the pattern.

  3. The pattern is offered in five sizes: child/Adult XS to Adult XL. The detailed size outline is below. These are easy to modify for foot and leg lengths. Please note: yardages are approximate and modifications to sizes, personal gauge and yarn can effect yardage requirements.

  4. Each of these designs are adventurous beginner friendly and have been tested and tech edited. And for the seasoned knitter, these make for excellent TV knitting.

I hope you enjoy this collection and I love seeing your projects! Please be sure to tag me on Instagram so I can see and share ❤

Materials
Sample Yarn Used:

I used Zitron Trekking XXL HELD DOUBLE. This is a standard light fingering weight with a yardage of 460yds/100g.

Yardage: Approx. 380, 420, 495, 580, 700yds fingering weight HELD DOUBLE.

The Hike Sock requires 2 colours. You will need 100g (100g, 100g, 120g, 140g) main colour and about 20g (20g, 20g, 30g, 30g) of fingering weight of a second colour.

The Ski Sock requires 3 colours. One MC of which you will need 80g (80g, 90g, 100g, 120g) fingering weight held double. You will also need 2 contrast colours, of which a 20g mini or equivalent of each should be sufficient for yardage for all sizes.

The Fish Sock requires 5 different colours. One MC of which you will need 80g (80g, 90g, 100g, 120g) fingering weight held double. The contrast colours for the stripes use a small amount of yarn. 3 x 20g minis/leftovers will be sufficient for all sizes. For the toe/cuff, 50g of a 4th CC will be plenty for even the largest size.
