They’re a figure common to many mythologies; mysterious wild women who possess items which allow them to move easily between human and animal worlds. From the selkies of northern Scotland to the crane wives of Japan, the legends of animal brides and the men who desire them are told in story, song, and modern media.

The Lonely Heart is a Hunter is a more-than-half circle shawl that uses pi shaping, but it starts with a cast on that will comfortably serve as a neckline for a cape-like fit. Beads are an option addition at the bottom of the shawl that helps emphasize swing and drape.

Size: 21.5” deep by 112.5” wide at the bottom border: 17” at top edge
The pattern is written in one size only. It can easily be made deeper to accommodate a larger yardage, but not easily made shorter.

Materials Needed:
- @700-750 yards lace weight yarn in a solid, semi-solid, or smooth gradient colourway.
- 3.25mm (US 3) straight or circular needle as preferred (maximum number of stitches on the needle is 391) or the needle size that produces a pleasing fabric in your chosen yarn
- @51 stitch markers to mark pattern repeats if desired
- @408 size 6/0 beads if desired
- 0.5mm (US 18) crochet hook for adding beads if desired
- additional 60 yards of yarn for the swatch
- additional 35 beads for the swatch

Gauge: 29 sts x 43 rows = 4” (10 cm) in unblocked lace fabric
A Note on Gauge
I do not consider gauge to be essential for a lace shawl. Instead, I recommend swatching for a fabric you like. If your gauge is markedly different from that given in the pattern, you will need to adjust your yardage accordingly.

Pattern Instruction Format:
The pattern is entirely written; you do not need to refer to the charts to work this pattern.
The pattern is mostly charted; the set up rounds for the pattern are written only, but the rest of the pattern is charted.
