As a new handspinner it is not uncommon to have spun up yarn that is not perfect. It’s uneven concerning the weight, the twist angle and the twists per inch. Consequently, it might not be suitable for a certain project. I wanted to come up with an easy shawl recipe that uses up these imperfect handspun yarns. It features simple garter stitch, an i-cord border for structure and a geometric shape that can be worn in several ways.

The finished shawl is about 73” wide and 17” deep.

Yarn:
200 g of handspun yarn in Sport to DK weight.
The sample used approximately 50 g of 4 colors of finish wool fibers by The Wool Barn, spun into 2ply yarn. All singles were spun with a Z twist direction and plied in S direction.

You can also use store bought yarn in similar weights, combine leftovers from other projects or mix in some miniskeins.

Needles:
US 6/ 4 mm straight or circular needles

Other Notions:
1 stitch marker, tapestry needle, scissors, scale, pen.

Gauge:
22 sts and 34 rows to 4” (10 cm) in garter stitch.
Gauge is not so important for this pattern. Depending on the thickness of your yarns, some sections might be a looser gauge/ thinner fabric than others.
