FLIGHT OF FANCY

Inspired by birds in flight over sparkling Lake Ontario, The Waterdown Hat is a reminder of the joy and power of freedom. The organic wool provides an earthy counterbalance to the delicate bird motif, creating a modern, easy-to-wear hat.

FINISHED MEASUREMENTS

7.5” (19 cm) length x 9.75” (24.5 cm) width / 19.5” (49 cm) circumference (un-stretched). To fit approx. 22” (56 cm) head circumference. The intended fit is slightly relaxed.

YARN

BC Garn Semilla (100% Organic Wool; 175 yards / 160 meters / 50 grams): 1 ball in any colour (sample used ~ 167 yards / 152 meters / 47 grams).

NEEDLES (adjust if necessary to obtain correct gauge)

One 16” (40 cm) circular needle size US 3 (3.25 mm).
One 16” (40 cm) circular needle size US 4 (3.5 mm).
Four double-pointed needles size US 4 (3.5 mm).

GAUGE (after light blocking)

7 stitches & 10 rounds = 1” (2.5 cm) in 1 x 1 Twisted Rib Pattern using smaller needle.

29 sts & 38 rnds = 4” (10 cm) in Bird Pattern using larger needle.

23 stitches & 35 rows = 4” (10 cm) in Stockinette Stitch using larger needle.

NOTE: For ease of swatching I’ve included my own gauge in Stockinette stitch—worked flat—unblocked. This information is provided for the sole purpose of helping you select your yarn and needles more efficiently. As with all patterns, results can only be guaranteed when knit at the stated pattern gauge.

NOTIONS

9 stitch markers (8 + 1 one unique marker for beginning of round). Cable needle. Yarn needle. Scissors.

Optional: 72 beads, size 8/0. Needle & thread.
The beads are sewn on individually. Why not knit them in? Due to the math of the motif it’s not possible to centre the beads on the birds otherwise. I enjoyed this final step, but if hand-beading isn’t your cup of tea, the bird motif looks just as lovely without the extra sparkle.

Turning over a new leaf—starting in September 2019, cold comfort patterns will be formatted with printing/tree-saving in mind. Photos will be limited within the main pattern (still available on Ravelry and Instagram, though) with a more printer friendly paper-saving layout. Enjoy!
