Tipsy Tiles Scarflet
Transform that single skein of special yarn into something impressive with the Tipsy Tiles Scarflet. Inspired during a retreat week in Provincetown, MA among dear knitter friends, this triangular scarflet’s design makes the most of limited yardage, featuring fully reversible knitted cables on a playful checkerboard motif that appear to “tipsily stumble” across the fabric. With included tips for using up an entire skein of yarn by weight, it’s an engaging single-skein stash buster.
CONSTRUCTION NOTES
- Shaping — The Tipsy Tiles Scarflet is a long, thin, triangular scarflet knit from tip-to-tip. It features right- and left-leaning 2/2 reversible cables on a field of checkerboard squares worked in knits and purls. Although this pattern is reversible, a “right side” (RS) and “wrong side” (WS) of work are designated for ease of instruction. When knitting, the left edge of the work gradually increases until a midpoint is reached, and then gradually decreases before binding off.
- I-Cord Edges — The first 3 sts and last 3 sts of each row are used to create polished I-Cord edges.
- Customizing Size — The scarflet’s size can be customized larger or smaller than the pattern by adding or removing repeats of the included Tipsy Tiles Motif, while increasing/decreasing in pattern.
- Maximizing Yarn Usage — Instructions are included on how to knit this scarflet using an entire skein of yarn by weight.
SKILL LEVEL & TECHNIQUES
- Intermediate
- Required techniques — Cast-on and bind-off of knitter’s choice, increasing and decreasing in pattern (written directions and video link included), cable knitting (video link included).
- Optional techniques — Reading charts (video link included), cabling without a cable needle (video link included). Refer to SPECIAL TECHNIQUES for written directions and video tutorial links for these skills.
YARN
- Buffalo Wool Company ‘Prairie’ (50% American Bison Down/50% Muga Silk; 214 y (195 m) per 2.47 oz (70 g) skein) discontinued; 1 skein; sample in color “Luminescence”
- OR approximately 230 y (210 m) of sport- or light DK-weight yarn. A solid or tonal yarn is recommended. (Refer to “Maximizing Yarn Usage” in CONSTRUCTION NOTES for maximizing usage of an entire single skein of yarn by weight.)
NEEDLES
US 5 (3.75 mm) needles (straight or circular needles at least 12 in (30 cm) in length) suggested for working flat, or needle size needed to obtain gauge.
NOTIONS
- Cable needle (optional)
- Removable stitch marker
- Blunt tapestry needle for finishing
- Optional: additional stitch markers for indicating motif repeats, kitchen scale (if maximizing usage of an entire single skein of yarn by weight).
GAUGE
24 sts/33 rows = 4 in (10 cm) square in cabled Tipsy Tiles Motif, after blocking. Obtaining exact gauge is not crucial, but amount of yarn needed and finished dimensions may vary.
FINISHED DIMENSIONS (AFTER BLOCKING)
- One size: Large
- Length, measured from cast-on tip to bind-off tip: 67 in (170 cm)
- Width, measured at center: 6.75 in (17 cm)
