Beep! Beep! Move over, there’s a cute convoy of knitted cars coming through!

I was experimenting with short rows when I created these designs, as I wanted to create a car that could be knitted in one piece to minimise all that pesky seaming at the end! So each car is knitted in one piece, and the wheels and light bars are knitted separately and sewn on.

The cars are in 2 sizes (9 to 10cm long), and the colour-work creates 5 designs: a red coupe, a blue saloon car, a white police car, a New York yellow taxi and a London black cab.

ABOUT THE PATTERN: The pattern has row numbers for each step so you don’t lose your place, instructions for making the cars, photos, a list of abbreviations and explanation of some techniques, a materials list and recommended yarns. The pattern is 6 pages and written in English.

TECHNIQUES: All pieces are knitted flat on straight knitting needles. You will need to cast on and off, knit, purl, work increases and decreases, and sew seams. For colour-work you will need to knit stripes (change colour at the end of a row). The window struts are embroidered in Swiss darning after knitting. This pattern also incorporates short rows (turning the work before the end of a row).

  • A pair of straight 3.25mm knitting needles (US 3)
  • 4 ply yarns
  • Toy filling
  • You could use buttons for wheels instead if you prefer.
