Tumbleweeds is an asymmetrically-shaped cowl with a fun stitch pattern for the lace section with circular shapes that roll across the rows reminding me of tumbleweeds blowing in the wind. The cowl has the look of a wrapped asymmetrical shawl, but with an easy to wear design that you just drop over the head.

Tumbleweeds is crocheted in two sections with an easy transition from one section to the next, and an simple final edging row. The main section is a two-row repeat and the lace section is a four-row repeat.

I used three colors of the worsted weight Knit Picks Wool of the Andes Superwash yarn (110 yards/50 grams), using one entire skein for the main section and partial skeins of two additional coordinating colors. I love the “heathered” colors of this yarn that give a soft tonal look to the cowl.

Yarn required 193 total yards:

  1. 50 grams worsted weight yarn, about 110 yards for main section
  2. About 22 grams (about 48 yards) of one coordinating color, and 16 grams (about 35 yards) of a second coordinating color for lace section.

I used Wool of the Andes Superwash, three skeins total, one skein of each of the colors, Dove Heather, Fjord Heather and Brass Heather. Knit Picks Swish Worsted is a nice yarn option also.

You can purchase yarn, or use this pattern as a worsted weight stash busting project! Pick your favorite color combination and enjoy a pattern where counting is minimal and you can easily memorize the stitch pattern, and crochet this project in an afternoon!
