This pattern is for a mosaic crochet square that can be used in other types of projects, such as blankets, pillows, satchel bags, table mats, etc.

Any yarn or hook will work, depending on the desired size of the finished square. I used yarn weight of 4 with a 5.5 hook, which creates a square of 13.5” x 13”. You will need approximately 4 oz of yarn total for this size.

This is a great way to use up scraps! I used up a couple scrap balls as well as other colors in my stash. You can do this in the same amount of colors I used, or you could do this in just 2 main colors, with the exception of the eye, which does need white to differentiate from the background & iris color. The Lotus is stitched in the same rows as the featured colors.

There is some color switching in this project if you do the example image, which will be included in the instructions. The odd # rows include the background, hand color, and eye white & iris. The even # rows include the border, the blue squigglies in the background area, the black outlines, and the lotus in the center.

I have a helpful video to show how I do various color switching transitions, although it’s using a different pattern but the concepts are the same.

Pattern is in US crochet terms.
