Notes

Like last year’s @WestKnits MKAL, this one is becoming more of a textural exploration than a colour one for me.

I’m just mesmerised by the 3D-ness of it all, so decided to let the colours play 2nd fiddle.

I’ve used our gorgeous, super silky, shiny Tencel 4-ply yarn along with super inky, matt Noble by Holst Garn.

LOVING the contrast between the two extremely different fibres. Even popped some bronze glass beads in there because of the simplicity of the palette so far.

MODIFICATIONS:

Section 3: Added copper glass beads using crochet hook.

Section 10: Added real brass dangles by threading on before knitting.

Section 9 “wedges”: reversed stitches (i.e. knit the purls and purled the knits) because I thought it looked neater and more “pin-stripe”.

Clue 3: Went for the eyelet mesh for this version. The brioche felt like it would be a bit heavy…

At the end of Clue 3, I have used this amount of yarn:
Platinum Tencel 90g
Holst Noble 48g
Gold Tencel approx 12g

My detailed notes on my own substitute Clue 4 pattern:

With black yarn:
Row 1: Knit 3, yo (inc), knit to 3 sts before end, yo (inc), sl 3 sts with yarn in back
Row 2: k 3 sts, purl to end of row, sl 3 sts with yarn in front
Row 3: as per Row 1, but thread on 4 glass beads using crochet hook method to line up with criss-crosses, and then 4 non-beads in between (so 8 stitch repeat). I used gold beads here.

Row 4: as per row 2

Row 5-6: same st st as above, but with increases at each edge of RS row.

Row 7 (RS): with silver yarn - K3, yarn over inc, knit until stitches without beads from row 3. Slip these 4 stitches with yarn IN FRONT, K4. Repeat from to end of row and then knit the last stitches and do inc and icord edge as before

Row 7 (RS): with black yarn - slide stitches to other end and using black yarn, knit all stitches

Row 8 (WS): with silver yarn K3, yarnover inc, then purl until the slip stitch bits from row 7, and slip those same 4 stitches with yarn in back (i.e. the “floats”/bars are in the front of the shawl), K4. Repeat this slip 4, K4 sequence until the end of the slips and knit to last 3 stitches. Yarnover inc and slip 3 wyif.

Row 8 (WS): with black yarn, k3, purl to end of row.

Rows 9 - 14:
Repeat row 7 (with both yarns) and row 8 (with both yarns) 3 more times. So you have 4 sliver floats/bars in the front of your work. Break silver yarn.

With black yarn only:
Rows 15 - 17: stocking stitch with black yarn, and incs on each edge of RS row, maintain 1cord edging.

Row 18: st st again, but insert glass beads using crochet hook to line up with other beads. I used copper beads here.

Rows 19 - 20: stocking stitch with black yarn, and incs on each edge of RS row, maintain 1cord edging.

Rows 21 - 28: Repeat rows 7 - 14 as set above with silver and black yarns.

Rows 29 - 31: repeat rows 15 - 17 as set above. I used gold beads again for this bit.

Row 32: Cast off loosely with black yarn.

Add tassels with a crochet hook. I used one tassel per stitch. Mine are 5.5” long, i.e. 11” of yarn doubled up. Mainly gold tassels, but with some random black sections.

Total yarn used:
Black Holst Noble: 80g
Silver Tencel: 125g
Gold Tencel: 75g
Sz 6 Gold Beads: 1 pack from tribe
Sz 6 Copper Beads: 1 pack from Tribe
Brass Dangles: from Tribe
