Notes

Kerstin Olsson, an iconic designer for Bohus Stickning, created both her famous and award winning Mist series as well as her popular Egg creations in various colorways during her years at the company, all of which I have long admired.

Many of her designs have since been recreated; first by Solveig Gusftafsson and her company (since shuttered) SOLsilke and now by Pernille Silfverberg of AngoraGarnet and I’ve enjoyed knitting kits from both of these providers.

Examples of these and other original Bohus Stickning designs that have not yet been recreated are currently available for digital viewing in the Bohuslans Museum archives.

Among those images, I found examples of a design called The Blue Egg (see cites below) using at least 2 different main colors and I really wanted to knit them!

So this is a project I’ve been thinking about for a long time but the wheels really started to turn when I spotted some of the similarities with Kerstin Olsson’s Egg and Mist designs.

When I compared the patternwork yarns of the Green Mist and the Green Myrtle, aka the green egg, I found them to be nearly identical except for the main colors. Ditto for the Gray Egg and the Gray or Blue Mists.

I have knitted the original Agget or Egg design by Kerstin Olsson as well as a variation on this theme called Nya Azalean or The New Azalea which is sometimes referred to as the Red Egg. I’ve also knitted The Gray Egg but most of all, I have always loved the Bohus Blue Egg designs.

This Blue Egg with the black MC is strikingly different from this one which has a pale MC and is also found as a hat or ‘mossa’ here.

So I started playing with my limited palate of blue yarns, all sourced from either AngoraGarnet or SOLsilke. I have extra yarn in the pale blue color 134 so that is where I began with my MC and am roughly using my chart from the Gray Egg to manipulate the blue hues from my stash to emulate (approximately) the Blue Egg with pale blue MC that I see on line.

From what I can tell, the Blue Egg with the black MC greatly resembles the way the New Azalea colors were combined (fewer colors in total) and I plan to make that one next if I can source enough blue yarns. This has been quite fun and challenging.

January 1, 2018

Finished knitting yoke with just barely enough yarn for some colors. The overall effect seems a bit darker than what I was hoping for but that may change as the MC takes over.

January 3, 2018

Finished short rows, wound next full skein of MC and changed to 47” needle. Finished raglan increases and separated sleeves from body. The more MC I knit, the less dark the yoke appears which is good.

January 8, 2018

The stockinette section of the body is half way done after decreasing for waist and then knitting 2 inches plain before I will start subtle increases for hips.

January 21, 2018

Both sleeves finished but had to lengthen one after I noticed that I had measured the length incorrectly. I had to take out the cuff knitting to lengthen. I can be such an idiot! Now to start the lower ribbing which takes a long time to knit!

January 25, 2018

Finished last bit of lower ribbing as well as sewn kitchener sewn bind off which took forever and I had very little remaining yarn. Put garment into sink to soak for future blocking.

Total weight of finished garment = 290g
