July 31:
162 ends, 4,20 m length for 3 towels.
Direct warp:
- Dark Wash, work across: 1, skip 1, 3, skip 2, 2. Repeat another 8 times.
- Spray Blue, work across: 1 in first gap, 1 in third gap. Repeat another 8 times.
- Light Blue, knot and cut SINGLE lengths: knot after first Spray Blue, put in same slot as Spray Blue. Go round warping peg, put in same slot as next Spray Blue, knot. Repeat another 8 times.
Warp took (approx.): Dark Wash - 350g, Spray Blue - 125g, Light Blue - 50g
Sley as in Pic 1.
Weft: Planning 286 picks per towel (26 picks = 11cm on loom), including seam allowance. Don’t forget to measure for a balanced weave.
Aug 1:
Towel 1: single colour weft (Light Blue), approx. 125g
Towel 2: same, Dark Wash
Towel 3: 3 picks Spray Blue, 3 picks Dark Wash, approx. 63g each.
Slightly longer warp would have been better, weaving became difficult towards the end.
Selvedges in Towel 3: the trick was to carry the unused colour on the inner edge of the fabric rather than the outer. With this weft sequence, it meant coming out under the hanging thread on the side where the last end was in a hole, and over it on the other side.
Aug 6:
Next batch of 3, different warp, number of ends as before, slightly longer
Direct warp:
- Dark Wash, work across: 2, skip 1, 3, skip 1, 2. Repeat another 8 times.
- Light Blue, fill spaces with single loops, cut and tie each time.
Sley as in Pic 2.
Towel 4: same sequence as warp. Not happy with left selvedge, will try cut and splice as described by Jeen.
Aug 8:
Towel 5: 1 pick Dark Wash, 1 pick Spray Blue
Towel 6: 1 pick Light Blue, 3 picks Dark Wash
Came off the loom approx. 49 cm wide, each towel approx. 116 cm long.
Shrank a fair bit in 60° wash, now 47 cm wide (on the narrow side for towels). Fabric lengths before hemming approx. 98 cm.
Splicing procedure worked well, but quite a bit of trimming of ends to do after washing.
