I saw this beautiful pattern by Lill Frostmann and knew I had to knit it, but it was only available in Norwegian. I found it listed on this website and was able to navigate the purchase using Google translate.

Once I had the pattern downloaded, I ran the .pdf through Google translation again and it looked really great! I’ve added the instructions for Google translating a .pdf in the second picture. I had to do some follow-up searches for certain “Norwegian” knitting expressions, but no significant issues.

Used alternating cable cast on to start things off.

The sections of single white stitches in the top part of the body and sleeves were translated as “lice” in the pattern which got me laughing and researching. The word “lice” in Norwegian is “luse” and the traditional Norwegian sweaters are apparently referred to as “lusekoftes” because of these bug-like decorative stitches. So funny!

For the front steek, I reenforced with crochet chained down the columns on either side.

Error on second row instructions for button band after picking up stitches. The first row is correctly knit on the wrong side to create a single row of purls (per pictures) but the second row should be knit (not purled) on the right side to start the stockinette. I tried two rows of purls showing on the right side but didn’t like it and only a single row is showing in the pictures.

Opted for the single row of double crochet with crab stitch edging along the front and it really adds a lot! I also appreciated the lining to the button band and wish all designers used this method.

While I was knitting this sweater, I was taking Fearless Finishing as part of the WEBS Expert Knitting program and used so many of the techniques on this sweater. For example, our instructor, Erin Holman taught us this set-in sleeve seaming method that worked beautifully.

I made the sleeves too long, but had some extra room in the bottle and was able to do a little controlled shrinking with a spray bottle, delicates bag and carefully monitored low heat in the dryer. Got it just where I like it!
