Notes

Rambergstranda is a crescent-shaped beach on the Lofoten Islands of Norway. Since it is within the Arctic Circle, its waters have a darker blue.
The colors in the body of the kep represent the white beach sands giving way to golden grasslands against the deep blue colors of the northernmost oceans. The gold and red Peeries represent the wildflowers that border the path to the beach.
The crown colors having gold radiating out to white represents the 24 hours of sunlight that the region experiences between May and July known as the Midnight Sun.
I gradated both the pattern colors and background colors using opposing value movements. I emphasized the central band of the main motif, that represents the traditional Xs and Os found in Norwegian color work, by using the highest contrast of the lightest contrast color of Natural white against the darkest background color of Dark Navy. This transitions out until you get to the darkest contrast color of Yellow Gold against the lightest blue background color of Sky Blue. For the crown, the colors begin with the lightest contrast color of Natural white against the Dark Navy background because it has the small checkerboard design that echoes from the central high contrast band of the main motif. Then the values transition through the crown until you arrive at the center with the Yellow Gold against the light Sky Blue to represent the center of the Midnight Sun.

Kep is the term for a Fair Isle hat worn by Scottish Fishermen but its spelling reminds my of the term “Kepi” Kepiis a French military hat that has a flat crown.
Toque is a term for a knitted beanie. The term toque is commonly used in France and Canada for knitted hat without a brim.
Toboggan hat is a Algonquian term used in French Canada for hats worn by toboggan transporters
In southern U.S. they drop the word hat and just use toboggan to mean a woolen hat.
600-900 Peru and Bolivia made 4-corner hats
1400-1700 England had Monmouth Hats aka watch caps worn by seamen and soldiers.
Roman Times: Pileus Hat is a felted peaked hat representing freedom and right to vote
Phrygian Hat, also peak shape, associated with French Revolution and its supporters and represents republican revolutions that swept across Europe. It is the hat held in the right hand of Liberty in many Roman coins. It is also the style of the liberty cap seen on the seal of the U.S. Senate.
Tam: A tam o’ shanter (in the British military often abbreviated to ToS), or “tammie” is a name given to the traditional Scottish bonnet worn by men. The name derives from Tam o’ Shanter, the eponymous hero of the 1790 Robert Burns poem.
The tam is similar to the beret that were worn by military elite because being flat and fitting close to the head, it wouldn’t get knocked off in close quarters or when climbing in/out of a tank and also with it being brimless, it wouldn’t block their vision or be in the way while holding a rifle. First worn by the French Chasseurs Alpins in 1889. After seeing these during the First World War, British General Hugh Elles proposed the beret for use by the newly formed Royal Tank Regiment.
