Notes

I love that this yarn came with a complimentary complementary stitch marker. Start wt: Heel/Toe = 26g, Solar Flare = 106g. Trying afterthought heel w/out gusset.

Standard toe-up, Judy’s Magic Cast On, 1 rnd st st, 1 rnd 3x1 rib. CO 22, inc. to 82 with alternating incs, switch to MC. Broken rib top, work straight for 5.5”, scrap yarn for afterthought heel, then dec each side of bottom/back to fit stitch patt. 9” leg, Jeni’s Surprisingly Stretchy BO. Heel: 84 sts + 2 sts from each side, decrease 4 in rnd 1 with 1 st between each pair. Work straight for 1.25”, then (k1, ssk, k to last 3 st of side, k2tog, k1) 2x per rnd until 24 sts rem. Graft shut.

I like the squareness of the heel on these, especially with contrasting yarn. They look weird off the foot, like they really need a gusset, but fit well.

So it turns out that J is very hard on his socks--especially these ones, which he wears at every opportunity--and I should’ve factored that in when choosing the yarn, at least for the heels and toes. Pulling out the afterthought heel and replacing it with one in a blend with nylon should fix that problem. Hopefully.
