Notes

This is a quick knit from the fabulous designer, Jennifer Weissman. My yarn was probably heavier than intended for this pattern, but it worked perfectly well for a large adult hat. I think that this pattern could be used for different yarn weights as long as you get the circumference right. If the band fits, the rest is based on lengths. This is a perfect unisex hat. My husband is modeling in the second photo.

For the first/test version of the pattern, the band part did not turn out exactly as the designer intended, but that’s the reason we test. I made some suggestions on how to make sure that the two sections of the twill band have equal height. (The bottom part of the twill stitch leans to the left, and the top part leans to the right.) Basically, you have to measure the height of your finished ribbing (inside the band) and then make sure that the two sections of the twill band are HALF that high. Then the bottom and top of the twill band will be equal heights when you fold and join the live stitches to the provisional stitches. My two twill sections are not quite equal, but the asymmetry did not bother me enough to frog and redo. Fit was perfect for my 23” circumference head. So cute and warm with the double thick twilly band!

Jennifer gave me permission to knit this with a bit more length to create a slouchy hat. Other than the extra length, I followed the directions exactly. However, I did alternate the needle sizes above the band as follows:

Needles used:

Size 4 US (Susan Bates) - Ribbing (inside band)

Size 5.5 US (4 mm Addi) - Twill part of band and first 2 rounds after the band. After folding, my band measured 2.75” high.

Size 7 US (4.5 mm Addi) - Next 2 rounds

Size 8 US (5 mm Addi) - Next 22 rounds

Size 7 US (4 mm Addi) - Next 2 rounds

At this point, I started the crown decreasing. Hat measured 4.5” from the top of the twill band.

Size 5.5 US (4 mm Addi) - All of the crown decreases.
Crown decrease section measures about 2.75” high.

Total height of hat laying flat = 10” (25.4 cm)

kimmyz's adjectives for this yarn
  1. Beautiful, sophisticated colors suitable for any sex
  2. Tweedy look, chain construction, great stitch definition
  3. Machine wash and dry. However, if throwing this into a warm dryer, expect the sweater to shrink 2 - 3 inches in length, but only 1 inch in width.
