I’m hoping to imitate the fit of Chuck’s favorite Carhartt hat. He’s requested a double thick hat, with a big cuff.
The hat deets:
3” cuff
8.5” tall
24” circumference
3” from top to end of increases
I’m going to knit this as an oblong shape, with a garter ridge in the middle. One half will be shoved into the other. Then, I’ll pick up stitches along the garter ridge and knit the ribbed cuff. At least, I think that will work. We’ll see.
I’m hoping I’ll have enough in one skein for all this.
Thinking this is what I’ll do. I’m guessing at my gauge, since I’m not doing a swatch (bad Courtney!):
Cast on 8 stitches, join in the round. Increase on either side of 1st, 3rd, 5th and 7th stitches. Continue to increase on either side of these stitches every round for 24 rounds (192 stitches). If gauge is 8 stitches per inch, should be 24” circ.

Think I’m getting more like 8.5 stitches to the inch - it’s hard to tell at this point and with this yarn. So, I’ll go to 200 stitches, I think.

Chuck tried it on, and we decided to go to ribbing at 8” from the cast on. I’ve used more than half the yarn already, so I had to pick up another coordinating skein. We also decided that instead of doing the pick up and rib, I’ll just do the ribbing along with the rest of the hat, and it will be 4x thick there. This is what I had originally intended, but he thought it might be too thick. After seeing what the fabric looks like, he agrees that it should be fine.
I’ve switched to the solid brown for the first 3.5 inches of the ribbing, then I’ll switch back to the mottled for 3.5 inches, then will complete the hat in brown. I hope this works to make a reversible hat that he likes the fit of!

Finally made it past the 1x1 ribbing! Speeding along the stockinette on the second half, by comparison.

Need to knit second stockinette section until 6.25” long. Just about 4.5” now.

To decreases. I apparently lost 2 stitches along the way. 198 now. Will do 2 less decreases the first round to compensate.
