Valerie Liang

I have just finished my final year in dental school, which was one of the best, worst, and most difficult things that I have ever done. There are 3 things that got me through dental school: the unwavering support of my family and husband, my 2 year old toy poodle Quincy, and yarn (lots and lots of yarn).

I first learned to knit and crochet when I was about 7 or 8 years old. I made a few knit scarves and crochet baby blankets when I was younger, but nothing hugely substantial. I would put my work down for long periods of time and rarely had a project with me. When I was in college, I started to become a lot more interested in crochet and learning new techniques. I made a few more blankets for myself and others, including lap blankets that I donate to veterans in nursing homes through my local library. After I started dental school, my passion for knitting was ignited. I searched patterns and videos to learn new techniques and challenge myself. I spent even more time and money building my stash of yarn. And I have finished multiple projects that I am quite proud of. I even taught several of my friends how to knit and crochet.

Dental school has been physically and mentally exhausting. While I love what I do, I didn’t always like dental school. Yarn provided an outlet for me to think about something else and to relax. It also allowed me to spend time with my dental school friends talking and thinking about something that wasn’t school. For me, knit and crochet are creative, relaxing, and social.

Now, I usually have multiple projects on the needles and I carry at least one of the with me wherever I go. I want to share what I’ve learned, the mistakes I’ve made, and the projects that I’ve created.
