MATERIALS AND TOOLS

TIP: If you need exactly the same yarn please ask in this shop https://www.etsy.com/uk/shop/LittleOwlsHutRUSSIAN?

  • to make smooth parts of the toy you can use any plain or velour yarn. The only one thing that is important is that the yarn should not be too thick and it should match eyelash yarn at the range 2:1. To make the blue bat I used Alpina Andre Classic (60% acrylic, 35% rayon, 5% spandex; 530 m/100 g) for the smooth parts. To make the white bat I used Vita Brilliant (45% wool, 55% acrylic; 380 m/100 g) for the smooth parts. I used about half a skein.

  • to make fluffy parts I recommend using eyelash yarn that is 1.5-2 times thicker than plain yarn, but working with the same size crochet hook. The outline of the toy will not change, as the base of eyelash yarn is approx. the same as that of the plain yarn, and the rest two thirds if the thread is the nap. To make the blue bat I used Kamteks Khlopok Travka (65% cotton, 35% nylon; 220 m/100 g) and to make the white bat I used Fleece yarn (the thread is wound of three strands, I removed one strand and worked with two) (80% cashmere, 20% nylon; 190 m/100 g (after I removed one strand). I used about one skein. The gauges are made in continuous spiral with 36 sts in the last round.

  • to make eye whites you will need embroidery thread or Iris yarn. You can use any cotton yarn or just a piece of white felt. I used Vita Pelican yarn (100% mercerized cotton, 330 m/50 g). You will need just leftovers of these yarns.

  • 1.0-1.5 mm copper wire - approx. 3 m. You can buy this wire in a craft shop, but I suggest buying it in an electronic goods store. There you can buy a 31.5 cord. Before buying the cord, make sure that the wire inside it is whole and does not consist of several thin wires. With a paper knife, remove the insulation.

  • Stuffing polyester. 2.528 mm cotter pin - 1 item, M3 washer - 2 items, 20 mm plywood or cardboard disk - 2 items (pay attention that the size of the disk depends on the inner diameter of the neck). You can make a wire frame to insert into the head. In this case, you don’t need cotter pins, washer or disks.

  • White fabric plaster or insulation tape.

  • Toy eyes or beads or semi beads to make eyes. You will need 2 items. The size of the eyes is 12 mm (depends on the size of your toy). Beads to adorn the wings.

  • Transparent glue (if you want to glue the eyes on instead of sewing them on). Sewing threads to join the parts together. Dry pastel paints (optional).

TOOLS:

  • 1.5 mm crochet hook (the size of the hook depends on the yarn you use); 1 mm crochet hook to make the eye whites
  • Wire cutter.
  • Scissors
  • Round pliers to twist cotter-pins.
  • Hard synthetic paintbrush to tint the toy.
