MATERIALS AND TOOLS

  • to make the head, body and upper part of the tentacles: any plain yarn, not very stretchy, of the main color (MC). I used Vita Brilliant Print (45% wool, 55% acrylic; 380 m/100 g), approx.1.5 skein.

  • to make the lower part of the tentacles and eyelids it is necessary to use solid yarn matching the MC. I used Vita Brilliant (45% wool, 55% acrylic; 380 m/100 g), approx. 0.75 skein.

  • to make suckers: a bit of fine yarn of white color. You can use Embroidery thread or Iris yarn. Vita Pelican (100% mercerized cotton, 330 m/50 g) is very good for these parts of the toy. You can also use fine acrylic yarn. I used ANGORA GOLD (20 % wool, 80 % acrylic; 380 m/100 g)

  • to make the eyes and pipe: embroidery yarn or Iris yarn, or any other cotton yarn. I used Vita Pelican yarn (100% mercerized cotton, 330 m/50 g). You will just need leftovers of this yarn. However, you can make these parts with polymer clay.

  • to make the cap a la Sherlock Holmes you can try to find tweed yarn. My Mr. X preferred Scottish Tweed by Troitsk Yarn (100% wool, 360 m/100 g). You will need just a leftover. The color is very beautiful. However, I would not recommend this very yarn. It was very difficult to work with this yarn. The fabric was always stretching, the crochet hook was always clinging the yarn.

  • 1.0-1.5 mm copper wire - approx. 4 m. You can buy this wire in a craft shop, but I suggest buying in an electronic goods store. There you can buy a 31.5 cord. Before buying the cord, make sure that the wire inside it is whole and does not consist of several thin wires. With a paper knife, remove the insulation. The cable inside consists of three copper wire cords, so having bought just a meter of cord you will have three meters of copper wire. I also suggest checking the cross section of the wire as new cables VVG 31.5 have recently appeared in shops. These new cables have a different cross section, which is 1.2-1.3 mm. This is very important!

  • white fabric plaster or insulation tape.

  • toy eyes or beads or semi beads to make eyes. You will need 2 items. The size of the eyes is 12 mm (depends on the size of your toy).

  • 20 cm of 5 mm leather cord or a ribbon to make ties of the cap.

  • transparent glue (if you want to glue the eyes on instead of sewing them on).

TOOLS:

  • 1.5 mm crochet hook (the size of the hook depends on the yarn you use). 1 mm crochet hook to make the eyes and the pipe
  • wire cutter
  • scissors
